Though it makes some people squeamish to think of, there is a fungus that lives on our bodies along with many other tiny organisms! However this fungus is usually benign as long as its growth is held in check by the good bacteria also there. If that balance between the two is disturbed and the fungus has the opportunity to overgrow, this can lead to a yeast infection. Unfortunately as well as the physical symptoms of itching, pain and discomfort there can also be emotional and mental problems too but there are effective treatment possibilities to choose from.
The fungus can multiply when one or more triggers occur. Some of these triggers though can be prevented and some need help from a doctor. For example if the infections are as a result of an existing illness that weakens your immune system that needs professional advice. But if it is the result of depleted good bacteria because of something like diet or lifestyle, this is something you can make changes in.
Antibiotics are to be avoided as a treatment method for yeast infections. Prolonged use of antibiotics is in fact one of the triggers of yeast infections. Many antibiotics prescribed to us cannot differentiate between the good and bad bacteria in our bodies and therefore when taken just kill both. But we need the good bacteria to keep the fungus under control, when the good bacteria are gone a yeast infection can occur. Plus over use of antibiotics creates a problem where you build up a resistance against them making them ineffective when you do need them.
There are over the counter treatments but these tend to treat your symptoms not the actual problem. Since part of the problem is low numbers of good bacteria, try taking probiotics. You can do this by eating more plain live yogurt, or you can get it as a supplement in capsule or powder form. Make additional changes to your diet by cutting out sugars and yeast and adding in more water and vegetables particularly greens. If you need help talk to your dietitian or doctor.
The key to clearing up a yeast infection is to stay focused. If you slip up, get right back on it, as the end results of staying yeast infection free are well worth the effort. Keep to the diet for a few months after the infection has cleared to avoid a recurring problem and then monitor what you reintroduce at lower levels than you used to consume before. Other areas to work on are quitting smoking, managing stress, getting enough sleep and consuming less alcohol.
