The Dangers Of Untreated Yeast Infections

When my friend was diagnosed with a severe, untreated yeast infection, she also got a good scolding from her doctor. It started as a simple case that may have been cured with OTC medications but already needed very strong prescription medicines for a longer period of time.

The infection, however, are not only limited to vaginal yeast infections. There are also oral ones, known as thrush, skin (yeast) infections that can affect areas that are usually moist, like the underarms, a systemic infection, and on the penis known as male (yeast) infections. And the infections don’t only limit themselves to adults. Children are known to have them, too, as many pediatricians will attest to cases of untreated yeast infections of thrush in babies.

Like with what happened to my friend, her symptoms became so bad that she literally dragged herself to the OB. Unfortunately, she hadn’t even tried any yeast infection home remedy, but just ignored what she was feeling until it was too late. She didn’t know that untreated yeast infections could enter the blood stream and become toxic, or even fatal.

Because yeast is a living organism and multiplies very quickly, it will definitely take advantage of the flux in the acid levels of the body as well as the depressed immune system and spread. Any burning sensations felt during urination will escalate into genuine abdominal pains. The itching will not stop and definitely, any sexual contact will dwindle down to zero. Worse, anyone that comes into contact with a person with severe infections is in danger of getting infected, too.

There are more serious side effects to untreated yeast infections, however. As was mentioned before, there is a danger of the infection becoming systemic. Once the infection goes into the blood stream, sepsis occurs. The toxicity of the blood causes clots to form and this could be a cause for organ failure because they can obstruct the blood flow to vital organs. It can also spread to the intestines and cause further complications such as mood swings and depression, learning problems and memory loss. Some seemingly unrelated complications are insomnia, stomach and digestion problems, and severe food allergies.

It’s not worth escaping the social branding of being called neurotic if you skip consultations with your MD for the infection. In reality, having an untreated yeast infection could cost you your life.
